The Abertis Foundation has, for yet another year running, calculated and offset the carbon footprint generated by the activities at its Castellet Castle headquarters, continuing the carbon management strategy it began in 2008. Its 2015 calculations, based on ISO 14064-1:2012 and the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol, have taken into account the CO2emissions generated by using petrol, gas-oil and electricity; by travelling for conferences and guided visits; by using water, paper and toners; and by treating the waste produced throughout the year. The Abertis Foundation’s carbon footprint has been reduced by 1.22 tCO2e in 2015 compared with the previous year, which represents a 3% reduction during the financial year.
Furthermore, the Abertis Foundation has offset the 39.17 tCO2e generated by its Castellet Castle activities by means of the Bandeira & Capelli Ceramics project, which takes place in Alagoas State in north-eastern Brazil. The project involves two small, prototypical red ceramics industries, which have substituted the native wood obtained through deforestation of the Atlantic Forest and Caatinga biomes with renewable biomass from the region (bamboo, sugar cane and coconut shell), thereby reducing the emission of greenhouse gases and the deforestation of important regional biomes. Moreover, the project contributes to the creation of new jobs and facilitates women’s entry into the labour market.
The Abertis Foundation has also renewed its “Clean CO2 Certified” certificate and seal as a guarantee that the emissions it produces have been offset. The seal features the certificate registration number and a QR code, providing access to a mobile phone application with personalised information on the emissions offset by the Foundation.

•This new agreement between Abertis Foundation and the Spanish National Parks Agency (OAPN in its Spanish acronym)—a Spanish public body under the Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO)—ensures the continued operation of the UNESCO-endorsed International Centre. The renewed partnership strengthens cooperation and knowledge exchange among Mediterranean Biosphere Reserves.
•The agreement aims to foster research initiatives, training programmes, pilot projects and outreach activities that advance the sustainability of Mediterranean ecosystems and enhance the resilience of biosphere reserves in the face of climate change.
•The renewal consolidates the role of the Abertis Foundation's headquarters at Castellet Castle as a leading hub for biosphere reserve activities, both within the Mediterranean region and internationally.
