Barcelona, 23 June 2023. The Abertis Foundation is working with San Cugat council to run its “El Apagón” (The Blackout) campaign. This action involves screening the story of a driver who caused a fatal accident by driving while drunk.
The Teatre Sant Cugat disco has been chosen as the venue for the campaign, as many young people will congregate there to celebrate Sant Joan.
The plan is for the lights and music to be cut off when the celebrations are in full swing, at around 3 o'clock in the morning. The idea is to grab the attention of the revellers for two minutes by screening a video featuring a young man imprisoned for driving under the effects of alcohol.
The Abertis Foundation has run this campaign before in Barcelona and other cities, including Madrid, Valencia, Salamanca, Ibiza, Verona and Santiago de Chile. The campaigns carried out have impacted more than 10 million users on social media, including nearly a million views on YouTube.
As Georgina Flamme, manager of the Abertis Foundation, explains: “the Abertis Foundation wants to send a clear message to young people not to get behind the wheel if they have consumed alcohol or drugs. We want to stir the conscience of the drivers and - most importantly - save lives.”
This campaign is one of the activities planned by the Abertis Foundation to foster safer, more innovative and more sustainable mobility. As a leader in managing motorways, road safety is a priority for Abertis and its Foundation.

•This initiative aims to strengthen awareness of driver drowsiness, one of the most invisible yet dangerous risk factors on the road, and a leading cause of accidents among both private and professional drivers.
•Scientific studies show that driving after fewer than five hours of sleep significantly impairs reaction time, attention, and decision-making, with effects comparable to driving above the legal alcohol limit.
•The campaign was unveiled at an event that brought together institutional representatives and sector experts in a forum for dialogue that discussed measures to prevent driver drowsiness and improve road safety education.
