In October 2009, the abertis foundation embarked on its first experience of university-business knowledge exchange outside Spain, with an agreement between its Italian office and LUMSA University, in Rome, for the creation of the LUMSA-abertis chair.

Under the direction of the Cavaliere del Lavoro Professor Giancarlo Elia Valori, the chair seeks to promote research into infrastructures and sustainability; last December it presented its first selection of activities under the motto Sustainable Management and Innovation, and it will direct the bulk of its efforts towards research projects, formal education and the publication and promotion of studies and research projects, which will focus particularly on the geopolitical, economic and energy resource setting in the Mediterranean area. Professor Gennaro Iasevoli will be Director of Studies.
