In an internal meeting with the MaB (“Man and the Biosphere”) Programme’s Spanish Committee, held in the headquarters of the abertis foundation, the proposal was put forward for the establishment of the “abertis fund for the promotion and sustainable development of the UNESCO’s World Network of Biosphere Reserves”. The fund was created as a financial scheme for encouraging compliance with the objectives of the MaB Programme and of the Madrid Action Plan for UNESCO’s World Network of Biosphere Reserves.

UNESCO's MaB Programme proposes an agenda of interdisciplinary research and training in capabilities for the global improvement of people’s relationship with the environment. It uses its Network of Biosphere Reserves as a vehicle for sharing knowledge, conducting research and monitoring, educating, training and participating in decision-making.
