New uses for biomass. Reality, experiences and perspectives

Date: 16 October 2008
Venue: Castell de Castellet (Castellet i la Gornal)

The activities included within the field of dissemination promoted by the abertis foundation include the organisation during 2008 of a conference on new uses for biomass, a broad source of energy in this region the use of which is not as widespread as it should be. Experts from several fields and representing certain stakeholders met at the Castell de Castellet and all defined biomass as the energy source for the future.

The meeting was attended by Núria Buenaventura, director general for the natural environment of the Ministry of the Environment and Housing of the Generalitat de Catalonia; Rosendo Castelló, vice-president of the Forestry Consortium of Catalonia; Martí Boada, PhD in Environmental Science and member of the abertis foundation scientific committee; Miquel Rigola, director of the Environmental Institute of the University of Girona; Jordi Bartrolí, dean of the Faculty of Sciences of the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB) and member of the Environmental Technology and Science Institute (ICTA); and Sergi Loughney, director of the abertis foundation.

The conference was the culmination of two lines of research, one from 2007Link opens in new window and the other from 2005 Link opens in new window, promoted by the UAB, the University of Girona and the abertis foundation on the use of forests and biomass as sources of renewable energy, providing an alternative to fossil fuels and electricity.
