Natural Park of Foix

The Foix natural park is of interest not only because of the wide variety of ecosystems around the banks of the reservoir, but also because of its rich architectural and historical heritage, centred on the castles of Penyafort and Castellet.

The territory of the park may be considered as an extension of the Garraf massif, where limestone predominates. Around the reservoir on the river Foix, there are holm oak woods in the shadier areas and pinewoods in the rest. There is also rich waterside vegetation.

As regards wildlife, there are important communities of fish (including carp, eels and others), reptiles (including tortoises and watersnakes) and amphibians (with frogs, toads and salamanders). The birdlife includes over 150 catalogued species, rising to 210 in the migratory period for birds from northern Europe.
