El Penedès and Castellet

The natural region of El Penedès includes the modern-day comarcas (counties) of the Alt Penedès, Baix Penedès and Garraf. It lies on a crossroads between Barcelona and Tarragona and between the Mediterranean coast and the Catalan hinterland.

Castellet i la Gornal is located in the Alt Penedès area, an area of Barcelona province with a character of its own and a rich diversity centring on the so-called culture of wine and cava. Its natural and cultural heritage combines the landscape of the vineyards with ancient Romanesque churches.

The hilly municipality of Castellet i la Gornal borders on the Baix Penedès and Garraf areas. The river Foix flows into the Foix reservoir in the municipality, where it is also fed by several streams. The municipality has over 1,300 inhabitants, spread between the modern-day villages of Castellet (the former capital of the municipality), La Gornal (the current capital), Les Casetes de la Gornal, Clariana, Les Masuques, Torrelletes, Sant Marçal, Rocallissa and the residential developments of Valldemar, Trencaroques, Els Rosers and Cal Rectoret.

Within the locality of Castellet, the castle is sited on a rocky hill at the eastern end of the village, and the parish church of St. Pere still stands behind it. The countryside around the Foix reservoir completes the picture of the village.
