The abertis foundation is an organisation which has since 1999 been devoted to backing research into the repercussions of major infrastructures on the regions, especially their economy, population and environment. As one of the results of the commitment to Corporate Social Responsibility by abertis, the premier European group in infrastructure management at the service of mobility and telecommunications, the abertis foundation also runs an extensive Road Safety Programme with the aim of raising public awareness of the need for responsible mobility.

Following the course of internationalisation set by abertis, the foundation is determined to pursue its activities in the different countries where the group operates. Thus, the Italian branch has opened in 2009 under the direction of Giancarlo Elia Valori. This is the first abertis foundation centre outside Spain.

As in the other regions where it works, the intention of the foundation is to pursue its research activities and its Road Safety Programme in cooperation with strategic partners such as the authorities and academic institutions, among others. This, the abertis foundation and the LUMSA University are setting up the abertis-LUMSA chair, dedicated to infrastructure management and their repercussions on the regions, especially in the countries of the Mediterranean arc.

The setting up of the Italian branch of the foundation in 2009 coincides with the organisation’s 10th anniversary and with the tenth year of abertis activities in Italy through the firm saba Italia; in the motorway sector, it also has a holding in the concession company Atlantia.
